Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin has a new day job.

Baldwin is now the vice president of advancement at First Tee of the Triangle.

“The organization helps children build character through the game of golf,” Baldwin wrote on LinkedIn. “It’s great to return to my non-profit roots and help improve the lives of young people.”

Baldwin received frequent public criticism over her last job, director of business development for Barnhill Contracting Co.’s Triangle and Streamline Divisions. She was hired in May 2020 and left in October 2021.

The mayor’s connection to the development community was one of the chief complaints in one group’s failed recall election effort.

Public criticism of her working for developers while serving the city as mayor did not play into her decision, said Baldwin, who is running for re-election this year.

“During COVID many people have been assessing their careers,” she wrote on LinkedIn on Monday. “I’m no different. Last month, I resigned my business development position at Barnhill and am looking to return to my roots in marketing or in the non-profit sector.”

Baldwin, who served for 10 years on the Raleigh City Council, was elected mayor in 2019. The mayor’s position is technically a part-time job with an annual salary of $27,550.

In the nonprofit sector, Baldwin previously served as executive director of the Holt Brothers Foundation and executive director of the Carolina Hurricanes Kids ‘n Community Foundation.
