A man who Raleigh police had pursued for over a week after a fatal nightclub shooting last month was arrested by federal law enforcement in Houston, Texas, on Friday morning, police say.

Members of the U.S. Marshals and the FBI arrested 35-year-old Giovanny Hernandez-Jaramillo at a residence in Houston, after police said he fired a gun at the Patio Nightclub in Raleigh on March 22, killing a 33-year-old man and injuring a second man. Hernandez-Jaramillo faces charges of murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

“The Raleigh Police Department extends its sincere appreciation to the U.S. Marshals and the FBI for their invaluable assistance in this investigation,” an RPD spokesperson wrote in a statement. “In addition to FBI Houston, the Houston Police Department, the Houston Homeland Security Task Force Fugitive Investigative Strike Team, and the USMS Gulf Coast Violent Offender Fugitive Task Force worked together to locate and apprehend Giovanny Hernandez-Jaramillo.”

Woman charged as accessory

Raleigh police on Thursday also arrested 52-year-old Martha Renee Jones on charges of felony accessory after the fact for allegedly assisting Hernandez-Jaramillo in leaving the state after the shooting, court records show.

Court records state Jones “unlawfully, willfully, and feloniously” gave Hernandez-Jaramillo money and a new cell phone after the shooting, helping him to evade law enforcement and leave the state. Jones had been in contact with Hernandez-Jaramillo as recently as Wednesday night, according to an arrest warrant, and was aware of his whereabouts, though court records stated she had not divulged his location to police at the time of her arrest.

Police responded to the shooting at Patio Nightclub on New Bern Avenue early that Sunday morning. Jorge Dorantes Carranza, 33, along with another victim whose name has not been released, were taken to a hospital with gunshot wounds. Dorantes Carranza died from his injuries, and the other victim remained hospitalized as of last week.

Jones is being held without bail at Wake County Courthouse. She is set to appear in court on Monday.

The March shooting was the second fatal shooting at Patio Nightclub in less than a year, The N&O previously reported.

Christian Mercado, 24, was killed Aug. 9 in a Saturday night shooting at the club. Jonathan David Bonilla-Ramos, 19, faces a murder charge in the case.
