The Durham Police Department is investigating a homicide near the American Tobacco Trail after a man found shot Monday night died at the hospital.

The man was found around 6:30 p.m. in the 3000 block of Fayetteville Street, police said in a news release.

Evidence markers led from a store to the popular walking and biking path, according to ABC11, The News & Observer’s newsgathering partner.

The man was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Police have not released his name or age or any other details.

Monday’s shooting happened in the same area as a fatal stabbing March 9. Chesleigh Lyons, 51, of Durham died in that attack. A suspect, LaRue Barbee, 46, is charged with first-degree murder in that case.

Durham shootings up 65% year over year

Shootings with deaths or injuries in Durham are up sharply year over year.

As of April 18, a total of 61 people had been shot this year in Durham, 10 of them fatally, according to the latest police statistics.

That was up from 37 people and 55 people who had been shot by the same time in 2025 and 2024, respectively, when there were seven fatalities by that time each year.
