A lucky gambler walked away with a big jackpot prize at a New Jersey casino.

The visitor sat at a “Wheel of Fortune” slot machine Sept. 6 at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City, the casino said in a news release.

The player bet $1.25, hit spin and watched as the symbols flashed across the screen.

Then, right at 2:06 p.m., a jackpot message appeared on the screen.

The gambler won more than $212,000.

Three other people won big prizes at the casino over the weekend.

  • Friday, Sept. 5: Someone won $93,374 on an Aristocrat GO Ghost Spooky Link machine.
  • Saturday, Sept. 6: A gambler scored $50,000 with a royal flush on a Game King 8.3 video poker machine.
  • Sunday, Sept. 7: Another person hit the $51,769 jackpot on a Dragon Link slot machine.

Casinos were legalized in Atlantic City in 1976. Since then, the city has grown into a small resort city along the Atlantic Coast with casinos, nightclubs and entertainment.

The area, about a 125-mile drive south from New York City, brings in about 27 million people every year, according to city officials.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
