In August, Zebulon Mayor Robert Matheny ordered a mask mandate unlike some other Wake County towns. Do you agree with this decision?
Yes, I believe the health, well-being, and safety of the members of our community is of the utmost importance and I believe decisions such as enacting mask mandates should not be taken lightly or without proper research, consultation, and analysis.
Mayor Matheny has a history of putting the people of Zebulon first as well as engaging in a proper level of due diligence when confronted with any issue. With specific regards to his mask mandate, I believe he has consulted appropriate subject matter experts, considered state and federal level guidelines, researched available data pertaining to COVID-19 and trends, followed the legal parameters set forth by the State of North Carolina, and is acting in the best interest of our community.
What is Zebulon doing right, and wrong, on managing growth?
Zebulon is at a vital point in our evolution. Through their efforts to include public input and professional consultations, I believe past and current elected officials have laid solid groundwork for Zebulon to prosper now and in the future.
Our downtown is on a course to become more prosperous than ever, our residential expansion is unprecedented, but we also have an exponential jump in traffic and concerns are growing over having adequate safety resources, first responders, grocery stores, restaurants, and schools to accommodate the growth. We must remain proactive in addressing this explosive growth to allow us to capitalize on our unique geographic appeal without compromising our small country town atmosphere.
We must continually seek ways to improve our town, protect our environment, promote smart growth, directly address traffic issues, ensure the community there will be adequate safety resources available, and provide a business-friendly atmosphere for commercial development.
If elected, what would your two or three priorities be during your first year in office?
The people of Zebulon are my priority – not just a few, all. Our friendly people are the heart of our little country town and a main reason why our town is being sought out and experiencing such growth. If elected, this native Zebulonian will take the responsibility to serve, listen to, and include all Zebulonians with the utmost importance.
I will prioritize the concerns of the people – specifically infrastructure and quality of life. While all concerns and issues may not fall under the direct purview of the Board of Commissioners, such as school building, I will address what is under our domain and will voice what isn’t to the appropriate department, agency, and audience.
What unique skills or life perspective would you bring to city governance?
Having had the privileges of being raised in Zebulon by a village of generations of Zebulonians and then experiencing the world serving as a proud Marine Corps Combat Engineer during Desert Storm/Desert Shield and working at the Drug Enforcement Administration in Washington, DC, my skills, views, and approaches are rooted in community, teamwork, and leadership.
All of these experiences have instilled in me the values of unity, unselfishness, initiative, perseverance, and integrity and have made me a dependable, tactful, loyal, decisive man. If elected, I will bring these traits to every aspect of the position. I will appreciate that I am responsible for and accountable to the citizens of Zebulon and will move in deliberate, thorough, equitable, objective, and ethical manners when making decisions.
I believe every Zebulonian should be effectively represented as we move forward into our next chapter and lay the groundwork for the future. I will work tirelessly to make that happen.
