A kitten with a “spicy” personality needed a home — then came good news.

Rebel — a “tiny terror with extra toes” — made his mark at a North Carolina shelter.

“Rebel’s not really into people yet. At all,” the Hoke County Animal Shelter wrote Aug. 21 on Facebook. “He’s more of a ‘look, but don’t touch’ kinda cat. But if you’re patient enough to win him over, you might just unlock the spicy love of your life.”

The 5-month-old kitten went up for adoption after he arrived as a stray. Then, the day after the shelter posted about him on social media, he got a fresh start.

“Rebel was rescued by a local 501C3 non profit rescue organization...,” the shelter told McClatchy News via email. “He is now safe.”

Rebel got a second chance after workers tried to win him over at the shelter in Raeford, a roughly 90-mile drive southwest from Raleigh. But they determined that building his trust would take a lot of time — and treats.

“He is a little force of nature wrapped in an adorable exterior,” the shelter wrote. “He will allow us to give him gentle pets and count toe beans but he will let you know when he’s done with our nonsense.”

Rebel was born with two extra toes on each of his front paws. The shelter also pointed out his resemblance to Grumpy Cat, the frowning subject of many internet memes.

“If you’ve got the patience of a saint, a deep love for weird feet, and the ability to withstand a little side-eye from a cat who thinks he runs the world — Rebel just might be your guy,” the shelter wrote when the kitten still waited for a home. “Adopt him today, and you’ll get the ultimate reward: a cat who’ll love you on his terms. It’s like having a relationship with a cat and an independent, untrusting supervillain all in one.”

Then came the heartwarming update that Rebel was starting his next chapter at a rescue. The Hoke County Animal Shelter didn’t immediately share additional information with McClatchy News on Aug. 25.
