  • Cold rain fell across the Triangle Friday; temperatures remained above freezing.
  • Rain will taper Friday afternoon; southern Coastal Plain could see lingering rain.
  • No rain expected Saturday in the Triangle, but low chances Monday.

Instead of wintry precipitation such as sleet or snow, most in the Triangle on Friday morning, Dec. 5, woke up to rain.

And not even freezing rain, Nick Luchetti, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Raleigh, told The News & Observer in a phone interview Friday morning.

“The temperature even up in Durham is 36 at the surface, so it’s cold rain,” he said.

Rain is expected over the next few hours in the Triangle, but should dry out Friday afternoon into the evening and overnight.

The remaining cold rain will be into the southern Coastal Plain later Friday afternoon and evening.

The highest risks for black ice will be on roads in areas around Roxboro, Warren and Vance counties, which received some snow, Luchetti said.

“We’re not really concerned in the Triangle area for black ice,” he said.

Rain chances over the weekend

As of Friday morning, there were no chances for rain in the Triangle area on Saturday, Dec. 6, Luchetti said.

There are low chances of rain Monday, Dec. 8.

“There were some concerns last couple days that Sunday into Monday, the little system coming through could maybe cause some winter precip concerns, but the models have backed off on that,” Luchetti said, “and our forecast is just for maybe a little light rain.”

After the rain on Monday, expect dry, cold conditions.
