Southern Charred ready to bring barbecue to Glenwood South
Starting Friday, there will be barbecue on Glenwood South.
Southern Charred, the modern barbecue joint by Matthew Kenner and Bunch of Fives restaurant group, will open Friday night after a four-month renovation of the space at 510 Glenwood Ave., next door to Pho Pho Pho.
The new barbecue spot will serve all the smoked staples: pulled pork, brisket, ribs, sausage and chicken and traditional sides – collards, slaw, baked beans and mac and cheese.
Southern Charred, though, gets creative with its list of snacks, offering a smokehouse version of oysters Rockefeller, with pulled pork, cheddar and barbecue sauce, as well as smoked deviled eggs filled with pimento cheese and bacon.
There’s also a cocktail list with twists on classics and many served in mason jars. The Old Fashioned is garnished with candied bacon and a there’s a frozen Jack and Coke and a Moscow Mule on tap.
The restaurant’s opening comes during a cold spell, but its big garage door windows will slide up when the weather’s warm and offer a nice look out on Glenwood South. The dining room, done up in handsome dark wood, can seat around 100, and the patio has room for 25 more.
Southern Charred will start with a soft opening, with dinner service starting at 5 p.m. Friday and lunch and dinner Saturday starting at 11 a.m. It will be closed Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. It will reopen Wednesday, Nov. 1, and continue with regular hours Sunday through Wednesdays 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Thursday through Saturdays 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.
The space most recently housed Shuckers Oyster Bar & Grill’s event and catering space. It also has been home to The Red Room and 510 Tavern.
Kenner’s group owns Anchor Bar and Milk Bar. They also own MOFU Shoppe with the owners of Pho Nomenal Dumpling Truck. They also have plans to open Dogwood Bar and Eatery about a block away, at 610 Glenwood Ave., by the end of the year or early 2018, according to the Bunch of Fives website.
