This summer, The News & Observer’s service journalism team went out to Raleigh’s 16 major grocery stores to compare prices of 40 items on a standard weekly list.

We collected data by snapping photos of regular prices for every item on our list that the store carried, then we plopped those prices into a big database to crunch the numbers and determine which store offers shoppers the best value.

You can find that full database below.

A few notes about our data and methodology:

  • These prices and quantities were taken directly from the shelf of Raleigh grocery stores in early June. To see which specific Raleigh locations we visited, read this story.

  • These are regular prices, not sale prices — even if the item was on sale at the time of our visit (and many of them were). Coupons, rewards accounts, credit card cash back offerings and other discounts will lower your overall receipt amount, which this calculator can’t exemplify. Learn more about how you can lower your overall receipt price with our deals guide.

  • Items not sold at a particular store are marked with a dash (“-”) and won’t be calculated in your grocery total, which can make a store’s “receipt price” look lower than others that do carry that item. But if an item isn’t included here, it doesn’t mean the store doesn’t sell other variations of the product — the grocer likely carries a different version for purchase, such as other brands of yogurt cups or organic offerings of boxed mac & cheese.

  • Some numbers in this tool look different from those in our interactive “receipt maker” and charts. That’s because we adjusted these numbers (shown in the database) to reflect a uniform product size across grocery stores for a more realistic price comparison, even if you can’t buy the item at that price. (The “receipt maker” instead shows exact prices and sizes of items to help you determine which stores carry the items you want — and show you how much they really cost.)
