Price Check: Your guide to the Triangle’s grocery stores and warehouse clubs

Read The News & Observer for tips and advice to make the best choices while shopping for groceries — and more — at traditional grocers and wholesale clubs in North Carolina.

Expand All

Grocery shopping is getting more expensive.

Food prices have been rising for the past few years, and shoppers have seen about a 3% increase on their grocery bills since the end of 2022, according to recent research by NerdWallet.

To combat the rising price of groceries, The News & Observer put together a grocery store deals guide to help you save the most money while doing your weekly supermarket shopping.

Combining weekly savings ads, free rewards programs, store credit cards (with no annual fees) and linked fuel rewards points can help cut down dollars on the non-negotiable necessities.

We looked at the most popular and abundant national chain grocery stores and wholesale clubs in the Raleigh/Durham area and broke down the following offerings for our readers:

  • Weekly ads and deals

  • Rewards accounts offered by the supermarket

  • Store credit cards and their cash back offerings

  • Gas station rewards

  • Store apps

  • Insider tips you may not know about (some can help you save even more money)

  • How many store locations there are in the Triangle

A few notes:

  • Details are hyperlinked within the story. Print readers can find all this information on each store’s main website, which can be found with a quick internet search.

  • We found most but likely not all cost-saving tricks at popular chain grocery stores in our region. This article is intended to provide a snapshot overview of store offerings to help slash receipts, not to give financial advice. If you have tips we missed that you think other readers might benefit from, send us an email at ask@newsobserver.com.
