Walmart has plans to remodel a handful of Triangle locations this year, changing store layouts.

The Arkansas-based retailer will update 37 North Carolina stores in 2026, including four in the Triangle, intending to “modernize” the shopping experience.

Changes to the stores include expanded aisles, interactive displays that help shoppers visualize merchandise in their homes, updated pharmacies and vision centers with private consultation rooms.

Walmart said it has spent nearly $850 million over the past five years to upgrade North Carolina stores.

Which Walmart stores are being updated?

Four Triangle Walmart locations are slated for renovations:

  • Cary: 2010 Kildaire Farm Road
  • Garner: 5141 NC Highway 42 West
  • Hillsborough: 501 Hampton Pointe B
  • Zebulon: 841 E. Gannon Ave.

Store remodels may change depending on construction schedules and “other factors.”

Walmart has two other stores in Cary, but the above Garner, Hillsborough and Zebulon locations are the retailer’s only ones in those towns.

Will stores close during remodels?

Walmart aims to minimize disruption to customers during remodels, Mariel Messier, Walmart’s director of global communications for its East Business Unit, told The News & Observer in an email. Any temporary closures will be announced separately, Messier added.

In addition to the remodels, Walmart plans to open a new store in Carolina Shores, its first in the town.

Walmart market share

For years, Walmart has held the highest market share among grocers in the Triangle.

In 2025, the grocer had a market share of more than 20% in both the Raleigh and Durham metros, according to a report from Chain Store Guide.
