There have been a couple of major business openings in the Triangle recently, among them new grocery stores in Durham and Chapel Hill.

There has also been some news regarding two of the most popular shopping centers in the area.

Several retailers have joined the popular Durham mall The Streets at Southpoint since late last year, including Gorjana, Dick’s House of Sport and Capital One Café, all first-to-market brands. But another store, which would be the company’s first in Durham, has recently been announced as a future Southpoint tenant.

In Raleigh, Mattress Firm closed its North Hills location, but a new store will soon replace it.

Here’s what to know about the new Triangle businesses.

2 new grocery stores open in the Triangle

The Florida-based grocery chain Publix opened its second Durham location Saturday, April 11 at 4628 Guess Road in the Latta Park development. The 41,744-square-foot store includes a full-service pharmacy with a drive-thru and traditional departments such as produce, bakery, deli, meat and seafood.

The Aldi at 1800 E. Franklin St. in the Eastgate Crossing shopping center in Chapel Hill reopened April 16. The grocery store was damaged by flooding from Tropical Storm Chantal in 2025.

“Customers can look forward to shopping the same, smaller format they know and love, with a focused selection that makes it easy to get in and out quickly,” Aldi Regional Vice President Krysta Cearley said in an emailed statement. “We’re proud to be back serving the Chapel Hill community and look forward to welcoming shoppers in-store.”

The toy retailer Pop Mart, which sells collectible figures such as Labubu, is opening a location at The Streets at Southpoint.

An opening date has not been announced, but the Durham store would be the retailer’s second permanent one in North Carolina. Pop Mart previously announced it would open at Raleigh’s Crabtree mall this spring.

Pop Mart has vending machines called Robo Shops in Fayetteville and Concord.

New furniture store at North Hills

Design Within Reach is filling the former Mattress Firm space at North Hills, making it the brand’s second North Carolina location and its first in the Triangle.

It’s expected to open in late summer or early fall at 4350-103 The Circle at North Hills St.

The furniture store offers pieces for both inside and outside the home, including lighting, decor, rugs and storage.
